Course - Transition

Transition Area

The 2009 transition area is conveniently located less than a half mile from the Finish line.

The location is the same as in 2008, in beautiful West Potomac Park adjacent to the Potomac River on the southern side of the Lincoln Memorial, next to the Polo fields with the Washington Monument as the backdrop.

The transition area is the largest in the country.  It provides athletes with ample room for gear and bikes. No more banging bikes into the person next to you or jostling for space for your towel and sneakers.  The larger spaces allows us to minimize the number of bikes on each rack - giving you some additional breathing room on race day. The enlarged space will still allow athletes to run on grass more than 90% of the way to and from the swim.

According to a 2008 participant:

"The transition area was well maintained and spacious, road closures were great, finish line was one of the best."
